The Temptation of Saint Anthony

Posted in Arty, Is it Nice..? by Ade Chong on January 15, 2010

Just id-ed Tyler Rigg’s tattoo from my previous post as Salvador Dali’s The Temptation of St. Anthony! I was right! I don’t know why I’m so obsessed with Dali, but one of the reasons is just how much depth his art has (see this post).

The Temptation of Saint Anthony appears successively in the form of:

  1. A horse, representing strength
  2. An elephant carrying the golden cup of lust in which a nude woman is standing, emphasising eroticism
  3. An elephant carrying an obelisk, inspired by the Bernini in Rome
  4. Two elephants carrying Venetian edifices in the style of Palladio (more tits)
  5. An elephant carrying a tall tower with phallic overtones (in the background)
  6. Escorial, a symbol of temporal and spiritual order (obscured by the clouds)

There is no known reason why Dali chose to use elephants, tho’ they’ve appeared in several of his paintings, such as Les Elephants.

I might actually seriously consider Dali’s work for one of my tattoos in future. Coincidentally, did u know that Dali designed the Chupa Chups logo?
